Should you buy wooden worktops?
I’m often asked by clients if I’d recommend buying wooden worktops. Therefore, I thought it was a good idea to do a blog on the advantages & disadvantages of wooden worktops.
Advantage of wooden worktops:
Looks
Wooden worktops undoubtedly provide a natural beauty that’s difficult to beat. Also, unlike other materials that can start to look tired with age, wood tends to look better as it ages.
Easy to repair
Being solid wood throughout, any chips, nicks or scratches can be quickly & easily sanded out.
Cost
Perhaps the biggest advantage of wooden worktops is how affordable they can be. Although wood worktops are a lot more upmarket than laminate, they often only cost a few hundred pounds more. In contrast, Granite or Quartz worktops usually cost £1,000’s more than laminate.
Disadvantage of wooden worktops:
Maintenance
To keep your wooden worktops looking as good as the day they were fitted takes a lot of regular upkeep. Solid wood worktops need to be oiled every 3 or 4 months to ensure they stand the test of time. It’s also worth noting that oiling doesn’t just mean giving them a quick once over. To maintain wooden worktops properly, they will need 4 or 5 coats of oil plus a light sanding in between each coat. It’s also worth remembering that although the first coat of oil may only take a couple of hours to dry, subsequent coats can take up to 10 hours to dry, therefor it’s certainly not a job that can be completed in just 1 day.
Summary
In conclusion, the answer to “should I buy wooden worktops?” really depends on whether you’re prepared to regularly maintain them. If you’re happy to put the hours in, then I certainly would recommend buying them. However, if like me, you believe you would be unlikely to get around to doing it, I would recommend a wood effect laminate or, if your budget can stretch, granite worktops instead.
