Six steps to spruce up your kitchen
Today’s kitchen is more than just a space used for cooking, it has become the hub of the home and family focal point; therefore it’s important to get your design just right. According to the National Home Improvement Survey 2013, it is also the room that most people want to improve. So if you’re feeling that your kitchen needs a bit of a boost or if you want your kitchen design to maximize your kitchen space then take a look at these top tips.
Size Matters
Whatever style of kitchen you go for, ensure it fits with the décor and architecture of the home. Small wooden cabinets may look swamped in a large modern kitchen, just as an oversized kitchen island will not benefit a quaint cottage kitchen.
Add a Splash of Colour
Nothing makes a room more full of life than adding a splash of bright colour. Colour is a tool which can be used effectively to draw attention to specific areas of your kitchen, for example a stunning view out the window or a new kitchen island. Matching coloured appliances, painting cabinets, and putting down a patterned rug are also great ways to brighten a dull kitchen. If you prefer a white or neutral coloured kitchen, consider adding a vase of flowers or coloured cushions in order to liven up the space.
Brighten it up
With well-designed lighting, your kitchen can appear significantly bigger and brighter. It is important to use multiple types of lighting to suit all kitchen purposes. Recessed cans in the ceiling, pendants over sinks or islands and functional lighting under cabinets for brightening countertops are popular methods for lighting kitchens. Mixing warm and cool light with a range of LED lights and halogen bulbs gives off a nice glow.
Peace and Quiet
Everybody hates the annoying mechanical noise some kitchen appliances make. Whilst browsing for your appliances, choose the quietest ones to ensure that you eliminate as much mechanical noise as possible. There are plenty of quiet and effective appliances on the market which can make a huge difference to maintaining a calm atmosphere in the kitchen.
Conquer the Clutter
Cluttered countertops can make cooking even more of a hassle. But there are several ways to organise and hide clutter in kitchen storage. Bulky appliances can be kept handy and off countertops, stowed away in pullout cabinets. A kitchen island is another smart storage solution which can hide pull-out bins, dishwashers and cooking utensils.
Shorten Your Commute
Whilst designing your kitchen, it is important to create an efficient floor plan which clusters the right appliances together in order to make cooking easier and less time-consuming. Having the sink next to the dishwasher is essential, and keeping the refrigerator close to the hob makes it easy to add extra ingredients whilst cooking. Placing a wall cupboard above the sink will result in banged heads!
