Do fitted kitchens really need to cost that much?
Wherever you buy your units, worktops or appliances from, all fitted kitchens have to be fitted. And that can be expensive. If you go to the high street chains, you’re likely to be charged an exorbitant amount for fitting. They’ll quote you about £4,000 or £5,000
Another thing you might find expensive is the price of the units in the high street chains. Especially given the how low quality the units are.
But what’s the alternative when looking at fitted kitchens?
Doing it on the cheap
One solution is to buy the units from one of the chains and use a builder to fit them. Builders usually charge around £2,500 to install your fitted kitchen. This seems a far better solution. After all, it’s not as if you’re getting in amateurs, is it?
Well, a builder may be expert at a lot of things, but, it’s unlikely they’ll fit your kitchen as well as a kitchen fitter will. Yes, they can probably make a fair job of it, but they’re unlikely to have the specialist knowledge at their fingertips for the best ways of making your kitchen fit & look perfect. You might not get a botched job, but the finish is unlikely to be as good as the finish you’ll get if you use a kitchen fitter.
There’s another problem with using a builder to fit the kitchen & someone else to supply the kitchen. When problems arise, the builder will often blame the kitchen supplier & the kitchen supplier will blame the builder. The problem with this is you’ve got to try & work out whose telling the truth, at the same time as being left with a half-finished fitted kitchen.
Try a trade only supplier
When clients try contacting builders for fitting quotes, the first thing most builders do is try and sell them a kitchen from one of the trade only suppliers. Although, on the face of it, this may sound like a good idea, unfortunately it isn’t. The reason is because the units trade only suppliers sell are just as low quality as what the high street chains sell.
The other problem with using a trade only supplier is that you are buying a kitchen with very little come back. This is because your contract is with the builder and not with the trade only supplier. Therefore, if you get a problem with the kitchen, when you go back to the trade only supplier, they will usually tell you that they only deal with the trade and you need to go back to your builder. However, when you go back to your builder, they will usually tell you that they are only responsible for the fitting and you need to go back to the trade only supplier.
This toing and froing usually goes on for some time until people eventually give up.
The best option for fitted kitchens
Some independent kitchen showrooms sell kitchens that cost similar to the high street chains & trade only suppliers, but are higher quality and will last longer.
Plus, In most cases, the price Independent showrooms charge for fitting is usually similar to what builder quote. Plus, you’ll usually get a better finish when you use a showroom to fit your kitchen rather than a builder.
