Don’t be fooled by “kitchen sales” from the big chains
I’m sure you’ve seen one of the big chains such as Wren, Magnet or Wickes offering 50% off. How could anyone resist that? kitchen sales like this seems too good to be true.
Well, there’s an old saying that, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is, and that’s certainly the case with kitchen sales.
The reality is, the big chain stores are one of the worst value places to buy a kitchen from, despite all their supposed kitchen sales.
How kitchen sales work
In the kitchen industry, most retailers work on margins of about 40% on the units. Therefore, if a retailer gives 50% off the RRP (recommended retail price) of the units, they’ll make a 10% loss. So, how can the big chains afford to make a 10% loss and not go bankrupt?
The reason they don’t go bankrupt is because their 50% off sales are fake. The reason they’re fake is because before they run a 50% off sale, they double the RRP of their units. They then knock 50% off the units. The sale is designed to mislead people into thinking they are getting a bargain. They then pressurise people into putting down a deposit by telling them the sale ends in a few days.
Poorly designed kitchens
The chains will also usually give you a poorly designed kitchen. This is for three reasons: Firstly, their designs rarely make good use of the available space. Secondly, their designs often contain design errors. An example of a design error is placing a fridge freezer or a fridge too close to a wall. Doing this means the customer will lose access to the salad drawer in the fridge. This is because when they try opening the salad drawer, it will hit into the side of the bottle shelf. Thirdly, sometimes their designs don’t actually fit the space. Unfortunately, many clients don’t discover this until the kitchen is being installed, by which time it’s too late.
