If you’re designing a kitchen, you want the best. At the same time, you don’t want it breaking the bank. So, where can you go to get a well designed kitchen, that’s good quality and reasonably priced?
Designing a kitchen with the high street chains
Most people who are designing a kitchen will probably begin with the high street chains like Wickes, Magnet and Wren. It seems a good start that you’ll be greeted by a “sales designer”, but that’s not all it promises. This is a salesperson, more interested in talking about fake sales & unbelievable discountss rather than your individual requirements & how best to design your new kitchen.
When you visit one of the chains, you’ll be lucky if they spend any more than about 20 minutes on the actual design. Plus, All you’ll usually get is one of the chain’s standard models, which may or may not fit in with your plans. This may work if you’re simply replacing unit for unit, but the kitchen won’t necessarily suit your space or requirements.
Designing a kitchen with the trade suppliers
An alternative is to let your local builder take charge of designing a kitchen for you. They’ll be able to access trade suppliers like Howdens or Benchmarx and their large trade discounts.
The first problem with this is that little of the savings will reach you. The second is that the trade suppliers are no better than the chains at designing a kitchen. They supply the most basic kitchens, so they can be fitted by non-specialist builders. That means you’re no more likely to get what you’re hoping for than from the chains.
Designing a kitchen with the independent showrooms
You may have been told the independent showrooms are great at designing a kitchen, but expensive. The first part is certainly true. Instead of someone selling fake offers, you’ll be met with a designer eager to find out about your exaxct requirements & lifestlye. Rather than spending about 20 minutes on your design, they’ll work on it for as long as it takes. In fact, most independent shworooms spend at least 2 or 3 hours designing your kitchen. Theferore, they’ll probably require you to come back in a few days latter to go over the design with you.
For the most part, it’s also true that the independents are expensive — but not always. A small number offer the same high quality for little more than the chains would charge you for a very basic kitchens. In fact, It’s even possible to get a luxury German kitchen for similar to what the chains or trade quote.
Of course, you need to pick out those few — and that’s where we come in.
