The best budget contemporary shaker kitchens to buy on a tight budget
Clients often come to me asking if I can help them find a contemporary shaker kitchen that doesn’t cost a fortune. The advice I always give them is to look at one piece shaker kitchens rather than five piece shaker kitchens.
One piece shaker kitchens (pictured below) are the the closest thing you’ll get to a modern flat door without actually being a flat door. Five piece shakers have the 4 vertical tram lines/v grooves on the door, one piece shakers don’t.
The purpose of this blog is to highlight the different types of one piece budget contemporary shaker kitchens available. By doing so, it’s hoped you’ll be able to make a more informed purchasing decision.
Vinyl, foil or PVC wrapped shaker kitchens
Tough & durable, vinyl, foil & PVC wrapped type shakers are the cheapest type of 1 piece contemporary shaker kitchen.
The disadvantage with this type of door is they’re prone to peeling. Peeling is where the surface comes away from the MDF base. The first signs of peeling is usually bubbling around the edges of the doors. Unfortunately, peeling doors can’t be repaired. Replacement is the only option.

Saying this, it’s unlikely you’ll have any problems with a good quality one piece wrapped shaker door you’ll get from an Independent kitchen showroom. Most Independent kitchen showrooms only sell high quality wrapped doors. The chance of a high quality wrapped door de-laminating is very small. There’s a much higher chance of a wrapped door peeling if you’ve bought it from one of the high street chains or trade only suppliers. This is because it’s mainly the high street chains & trade only suppliers that supply the lowest quality type wrapped doors.
Painted wood and MDF shaker kitchens
Painted wood and MDF shakers cost about 30% more than wrapped shaker kitchens. However, this type has 2 big advantages over the wrapped type. Firstly, there’s no chance of it ever peeling. Secondly, if you wish to change the colour of the doors a few years down the line, it’s quick & easy to simply re paint the doors. This isn’t the case with wrapped type doors.
