How to find the best-value shaker style kitchens
If you’re looking for a timeless look in your new kitchen, you’ve probably come across shaker style kitchens. Shaker style kitchen cabinets are a popular style available from most retailers. However, it’s important to understand that they differ substantially in price and quality.
So, how do you find the best-value shaker kitchens?
Shaker style kitchens from the high-street chains and trade-only suppliers
For many, the first port of call for a shaker kitchen would be one of the large high-street chains. Companies like Wren, Magnet or Wickes are familiar names, and their showrooms are usually convenient to access.
If you’re a little more ambitious, you might use a trade-only supplier via your builder. There are a number of these, the best known ones being Howdens, Benchmarx and Magnet Trade.
The advantage of using either of these options is that their Shaker style kitchen cabinets are cheap. The downside, though, is that it isn’t only the price that’s cheap — it’s also the quality. This means that buying one of their kitchens is a false economy, as it won’t be long before it needs replacing again. As the famous saying goes, “buy cheap buy twice”
The other problem with these places is the quality of their design service. This is usually poor. For example, It’s not uncommon for them to get the measurements wrong, meaning the kitchen won’t fit. There designs are also often full of design errors. Unfortunately, you’ll often only discover these once the kitchen’s been fitted, by which time it’s too late.
Shaker style kitchens from the well known high-end bespoke kitchen suppliers
At the other end of the market are the well known high-end bespoke kitchen suppliers. These include places like Tom Howley, Harvey Jones, deVOL and Humphrey Munson. They’ll also sell you a shaker kitchen.
As you’d expect, you’ll get an excellent quality kitchen from one of these places. The problem is though, you’ll pay a small fortune for one. For instance, you might want a large kitchen with granite or quartz worktops and good-quality appliances. When you add fitting, their prices typically start at £60,000.
Shaker style kitchens from smaller suppliers
The final option is to look at the great number of smaller kitchen suppliers. Their kitchens differ in both price and quality. So, while some are just as cheap and low-quality as places like Howdens, Wren, Magnet and Wickes, others are just as expensive and high-quality as places like Tom Howley, Harvey Jones, deVOL and Humphrey Munson.
How to get a better deal
The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune to get a good-quality kitchen. If you know the right smaller suppliers to visit, it’s possible to get a kitchen that costs similar to places like Howdens, Wren, Magnet and Wickes, but is much higher-quality.
Plus, the right smaller suppliers will design your kitchens just as well, if not better than places like Tom Howley, Harvey Jones, deVOL and Humphrey Munson.

“After visiting a number of bespoke kitchen suppliers and receiving sky high quotes, I stumbled upon Kitchenfindr’s website. Lloyd recommended two showrooms, both of which quoted me half of what the showrooms I had found quoted”
Shaf Zaman, Clapham, London
“Lloyd was able to point me to local independent kitchen retailers offering greater quality and value compared to the high street chains”
Mohammed Hashi, Northolt, Middx
“Kitchenfindr recommended a showroom who were much better value than most of the other showrooms I’d previously looked at”
Hannah Malone, Esher, Surrey
“No-one should buy a kitchen without speaking to Kitchenfindr first. The worrying bit is that if you don’t get his advice, you could easily end up spending £15k upwards more”
Bal Pabla, Romford, Essex
“I had a quote for a very expensive Harvey Jones kitchen and they did the same for about a third less!”
