How to find the best cheap kitchens?
A new kitchen is a major purchase, and it’s tempting to try and cut costs. But sometimes cheap kitchens can be a false economy — especially if they’re the wrong kind.
The right and wrong kinds of cheap kitchens
There are two types of cheap kitchens. The wrong type is cheap in price and cheap in quality. The price is low because it’s made from cheap, low quality components. The problem with this is you’ll end up having to replace your kitchen again far sooner than you’d expected. As the old saying goes, ‘buy cheap, buy twice!’
The right type are just as cheap in price as the wrong type, but don’t compromise on quality. Cheap doesn’t have to mean shoddy.
The kitchens you’ll find in the high street chains & trade only suppliers are the wrong type. They are cheap in price & cheap in quality.
The kitchens you’ll find in independent kitchen showrooms are usually the right type. They are cheap in price, yet high in quality & built to last.
What to look for in cheap kitchens:
Check what material the doors are made out of. Lower-quality kitchens will have foil, PVC, PET or vinyl wrapped doors. This is the type that peels. On the other hand, good quality cheap kitchens will feature painted and lacquered doors. Painted lacquered doors never peel.
Check the edging used on the cabinets. Impact-resistant PVC or ABS edging will protect the delicate front edges from chips and damage. In contrast, thin melamine edging will offer little or no protection.
Check out the quality of the chipboard used to make the carcasses. low quality cheap kitchens will be constructed from low density chipboard. Low density chipboard will bow under the weight of the worktops. In contrast, high quality cheap kitchens will be made from high density chipboard. High density chipboard will support the weight of the heaviest worktops & never bow.
