Ceramic worktops – A viable alternative to granite and quartz?
Ceramic worktops were launched in 2012 by Dutch worktop supplier Jetstone. Since then, they have increasingly becoming the worktop material of choice for discerning customers looking for something a bit different to granite and quartz.
In 2014, two more brands also came onto the market; Dekton by Consetino and Neolith by Thesize.
Available in an endless and ever growing choice of colours and finishes, ceramic also offer the benefit of being available in a wide range of floor tile modules for a fully coordinated design.
Advantages of Ceramic worktops
Ceramic worktops are 100% Stain proof
Being non porous, ceramic is 100% stain proof. In contrast, Granite worktops, particularly light coloured granite worktops, need to be sealed regularly to ensure they remain stain resistant.
Quartz is also meant to be non porous and supposedly never needs to be sealed. However, lots of suppliers sell cheap low-quality Chinese and Korean quartz worktops that can be easily stained.
Most of the suppliers that sell these are the ones that sell directly to the public rather than the ones that supply kitchen showrooms.
Ceramic worktops are 100% Flame and heat proof (as shown below)
Ceramic is more resistant to heat than granite and quartz
Extremely scratch proof
Being harder than quartz and granite, Ceramic worktops are almost impossible to scratch.
100% Hygienic
Can be made into sinks
Just like Corian and solid surface, ceramic can be moulded into sinks to create a completely seamless finish. This can be seen in the picture below.
Available as thin as 10mm (as shown below)
Disadvantages of Ceramic
Can chip
Although ceramic worktops are meant to be more durable than quartz worktops, in reality, they chip easily.
Cost – more expensive than granite and quartz
When they first came out, ceramic worktops cost up to twice the price of granite & quartz. However, the price has come down considerably since then. Today, ceramic worktops only cost around 20% more than granite and quartz.
