Ceramic worktops – A viable alternative to granite and quartz?
Jetstone, a Dutch worktop supplier, launched ceramic worktops in 2012. Since then, they’ve increasingly become the worktop material of choice for discerning customers looking for something a bit different to granite and quartz.
In 2014, two more brands also came onto the market; Dekton by Consetino and Neolith by Thesize.
Ceramic is available in an endless and ever growing choice of colours and finishes. Ceramic also offer the benefit of being available in a wide range of floor tile modules for a fully coordinated design.
Advantages of Ceramic worktops
Ceramic worktops are 100% Stain proof
Being non porous, ceramic is 100% stain proof. Granite worktops, in contrast, require regular sealing to maintain their stain-resistant property.
Non-porous Quartz is supposedly meant not to need sealing. However, lots of suppliers sell cheap low-quality Chinese and Korean quartz worktops that can be easily stained.
Most of the suppliers that sell these are the ones that sell directly to the public rather than the ones that supply kitchen showrooms.
Ceramic worktops are 100% Flame and heat proof (as shown below)
Ceramic is more resistant to heat than granite and quartz.
Extremely scratch proof
Being harder than quartz and granite, Ceramic worktops are almost impossible to scratch.
100% Hygienic
Can be made into sinks
Ceramic can be moulded into sinks to create a seamless finish. This can be seen in the picture below.
Disadvantages of Ceramic
Can chip
Ceramic worktops, despite being intended to be more durable than quartz worktops, easily chip in reality.
Cost – more expensive than granite and quartz
When they first came out, ceramic worktops cost up to twice the price of granite & quartz. However, the price has come down considerably since then. Today, ceramic worktops only cost around 20% more than granite and quartz.
