3 things to consider when looking at solid wood kitchens
When you’re browsing the various solid wood kitchens for sale, they’ll all look great in the showroom. However, before you part with your hard earned cash, these are three important things to be aware of.
Most solid wood kitchens do not have 100% solid wood doors
Although the frames of the doors are made from solid wood, the centre panels usually aren’t. The centre panels are usually veneered. The reason why they’re usually veneered is because a veneered centre panel is more thermally stable than a solid wood centre panel. Therefore, there’s no chance of the door bowing, splitting or cracking like there would be with a solid wood centre panel.
Most solid wood kitchens do not have solid wood carcasses
The carcasses are never made from solid wood. They’re usually made from either high density chipboard or veneer. Again, the reason for this is because high density chipboard and veneer are both more thermally stable than solid wood. Therefore, there’s no risk of the carcasses bowing, splitting or cracking like there would be if they were made from solid wood.
Hand-painted isn’t necessarily the best quality paint finish
Many solid wood kitchen charge about £5,000 extra to hand-paint your kitchen on-site. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be getting the highest quality paint finish. In fact, factory sprayed kitchens are more durable than hand-painted kitchens. This is because the paint used on factory sprayed kitchens contain hardeners that make the paint more durable and less susceptible to chipping. In contrast, the paints used for hand-painting don’t contain hardeners. Therefore, hand-painted kitchens are more likely to chip.
Also, some people think that you can only have a bespoke coloured kitchen if you buy a hand-painted kitchen. However, this isn’t necessarily the case. Many retailers who sell factory sprayed kitchens also offer the option of having a bespoke coloured kitchen.
