Why buying a DIY kitchen is a false economy
Most of us like to do a bit of DIY around the house. It can save money, of course, but there’s also an element of pride in the achievement. And that’s all fine if you’re painting walls or putting up shelves, but a DIY kitchen is another matter entirely.
Apart from the obvious problem — installing a kitchen to a high standard is a skilled operation, even if it’s a DIY kitchen. and a botched job could be disastrous.
Believe it or not, some independent kitchen showrooms can actually supply you with a kitchen that costs similar to the DIY stores and trade only suppliers. However, their kitchen will be higher quality than a DIY store kitchen & will last longer. Therefore, buying a DIY kitchen is actually a false economy.
Why is a kitchen from an independent kitchen showroom higher quality?
A couple of examples will illustrate the difference. Firstly, when you buy a DIY kitchen from one of the high street chains or trade only suppliers, the door is likely to be the low-quality wrapped type. The problem with wrapped doors is they peel (as pictured below). Unfortunately, once a wrapped door has started to peel, the only option is to replace it, which is costly.
In contrast, most independent kitchen showrooms do not sell wrapped doors. They mostly sell high-quality painted & lacquered doors. These never peel.
Another example is the quality of the chipboard used to construct the carcasses. DIY kitchen units from the chains and trade only suppliers are made out of cheap, low density chipboard. The problem with low density chipboard is it bows under the weight of the worktops. The first signs of bowing is usually seen on the backs of the units. Once the backs start to bow, it isn’t usually long before they come away completely, exposing the wall & any pipework behind.
In contrast, independent kitchen mostly sell units constructed from high-quality, high density chipboard. High density chipboard will never bow under the weight of the worktops.
How can some Independents kitchen showrooms be such good value.
It seems insane that you can buy a high-quality kitchen from some Independent kitchen showrooms for similar to what you’ll pay for a low quality DIY kitchen from the chains or trade only suppliers.
However, it’s all down to overheads. Independent kitchen showrooms have much lower overheads than the chains. Unlike the chains, they don’t have large super stores to pay for or multi million pound TV adverts to pay for. Therefore, some independent kitchen showrooms can afford to offer you a much higher quality kitchen for a similar price to the chains.
Of course, not all Independent kitchen showrooms offer such great value. Some showrooms are more expensive than the chains and trade only suppliers.
