Should you buy a granite sink?
What is a granite sink?
A granite sink is comprised of roughly 75% granite particles & 25% resins & pigments. In terms of durability granite sinks are practically indestructible.
Should you buy a granite sink?
Yes, they’re heat resistant
Granite sinks are designed to withstand temperatures of up to 280 degrees centigrade without burning or melting.
Yes, they’re scratch resistant
Granite sinks are so hard they’re almost impossible to scratch. In fact, if you were to scrape a metal fork across the surface of a granite sink, the silver marks left behind would be the steel from the fork rather than scratches in the granite. The marks can be simply wiped off.
Yes, they’re chip and crack resistant
Again, due to their hardness, granite sinks are almost impossible to chip or crack.
Yes, they’re stain resistant
The resin used in the manufacturing process make granite sinks non porous. They are therefore impossible to stain. The added benefit of this is that they are suitable for use in kosher kitchens.
Yes, they can be undermounted for a seamless look
Traditionally undermount sinks were only available in stainless steel or ceramic. Nowadays many more brands are offering granite undermount sinks (as shown below) for use in granite, quartz, solid surface or wooden worktops.
Yes, they come in a wide choice of finishes
Whilst all brands offer granite sinks in a smooth finish, some are now starting to introduce new & unique finishes. One example of this is Astracast’s Rok Tex finish (shown below) which gives the sink the look of being made from natural slate.
Yes, they’re affordable
Starting at around £100 including vat, granite sinks are also extremely good value for money.
No, can be difficult to match with worktop
Unlike stainless steel sinks which will blend with any worktop colour or material, granite sinks can be much harder to match.
No, limited choice of colours
Granite sinks only come in a limited amount of colours. The other drawback is that they are only available in a matt finish. If you prefer more of a shiny/glossy finish, unfortunately your choices will be limited to ceramic & stainless steel.
No, easy to break crockery in
Their hardness can also be a disadvantage. most crockery is easily chipped or cracked if dropped into a granite sink too hard.
In summary, although there a few disadvantages of having a granite sink, in my opinion, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
