Shaker kitchens – modern, classical or a ‘modern classic’?
Broadly speaking there are 3 styles of kitchens on the market. There are modern kitchens, there are classical kitchens & there are classical kitchens with a modern twist, also known as ‘modern classics’. Shaker kitchens are the only type of kitchen you will find in all three.
The purpose of this blog is to highlight the different types of shaker kitchens available to help you choose the kitchen best suited to your lifestyle.
5 piece shaker kitchens
This is perhaps the most common type of shaker kitchen. It’s called a 5 piece shaker because it’s made from 5 separate pieces that are joined together. The frame consists of 4 pieces with the centre panel being the 5th piece.

1 piece shaker kitchens
1 piece shakers are another type of shaker kitchen. They are made from just 1 piece of MDF or wood. The centre panel is formed by routing out a section of the MDF or timber.

In-Frame shaker kitchens
In-Frame shakers have grown in popularity over the last few years. They have a frame that runs round each of the doors & drawers. Offering a much more traditional look than a standard shaker kitchen, these shakers generally carry a premium.

Step shaker / Chamfered shaker kitchens
Step shakers /chamfered shakers are another type of shaker kitchen. More traditional than a standard shaker, Step & Chamfered shakers have a beading or chamfer that runs round the edges of the centre panel that creates a slightly softer look.

Raised panel shaker kitchens
Raised panel shakers are perhaps the most traditional of all shakers. These have a raised centre panel.

Gloss shaker kitchens
The gloss shaker kitchen has become very popular in recent years. Perhaps the ultimate modern classic kitchen, gloss shakers combine the traditional look of a shaker with the on-trend look of hi-gloss.
