Pyrolytic ovens – are they worth paying extra for?
Before discussing whether or not the extra cost of buying a pyrolytic oven is justified, it is important to explain how they work.
How do pyrolytic ovens work?
Pyrolytic ovens are the most common type of self cleaning oven available. When you run a pyrolytic cleaning cycle, the oven will lock off the door and heat up to approximately 500 degrees Celsius for around 90 minutes. During the cycle any burnt on food residues on the oven walls will be incinerated leaving the oven sparklingly clean. All that will be left in the oven is a thin layer of ash that you can quickly & easily remove with a damp sponge or dustpan and brush.
How much extra do they cost?
Pyrolytic ovens cost between 30% – 60% more than a standard oven. A basic Neff single oven costs around £400. However, a pyrolytic Neff single oven costs around £650. A basic AEG single oven costs around £350. However, a pyrolytic AEG single oven will set you back around £470.
Are they worth paying extra for?
Yes – saves you a lot of time & effort
Spending several hours on your hands and knees manually cleaning the oven is definitely one of the worst jobs in the house. It is so much easier to press a button and let the oven’s pyrolytic self cleaning function do all the hard work for you.
Yes – kinder to the environment
Unlike manual cleaning that relies on elbow grease and chemicals to clean, pyrolytic ovens require no chemicals so are kinder to the environment.
Yes – the cost per clean is pennies rather than pounds
It is a common misconception that pyrolytic ovens are big energy guzzlers. The electricity cost of running a self cleaning cycle is literately pennies. In contrast, the cost of cleaning an oven by hand is around £5 a time due to the need to buy gloves & chemicals.
No – You still have to clean the rails, trays & racks by hand
Before you run a pyrolytic cycle, all the rails, trays & racks have to be removed from the oven. Unfortunately these still have to be cleaned manually.
No – Catalytic self cleaning ovens are better value
Pyrolytic ovens are not the only type of self cleaning ovens on the market. Ovens with catalytic self cleaning liners are also popular and cost less than pyrolytic ovens.
Plus, catalytic self cleaning ovens are more energy efficient than pyrolytic ovens as they do not have to be heated up to extremely high temperatures to clean.
