How to find the best-value Scandi kitchens
If you’re looking for a new kitchen, you may be thinking about Scandi kitchens. After all, the characteristic bright, clean look can be extremely attractive, especially in the midst of a dull winter.
There are numerous outlets that sell Scandi kitchens, but the problem is they vary considerably in both price and quality. So where do you go to find the best-value Scandi kitchens?
Scandi kitchens from the high-street chains and trade-only suppliers
For many people, the first port of call would be one of the high-street chains or trade-only suppliers. Not only are places like Howdens, Wren, Magnet and Wickes easy to find, they’re cheap too.
The big downside, though, is that the quality of their kitchens are low and they don’t last very long. Therefore, they don’t represent good value for money. As the old saying goes, “buy cheap, buy twice”
The other problem with the chains and trade-only suppliers is their designs are usually poor. This is for three reasons: Firstly, their designs don’t usually make good use of the available space. Secondly, their designs often contain design errors. An example of a design error is placing a fridge freezer or a fridge too close to a wall. Doing this means the customer will lose access to the salad drawer in the fridge. This is because when they try opening the salad drawer, it will hit into the side of the bottle shelf. Thirdly, sometimes their designs don’t actually fit the space. Unfortunately, some clients don’t discover this until the kitchen is being installed, by which time it’s too late.
Another downside with the chains is that their installation prices are very high. They typically charge about twice as much as what builders and independent kitchen showrooms charge.
Scandi kitchens from the high-end, bespoke suppliers
At the other end of the market, are the high-end, bespoke kitchen suppliers who, unlike the chains, produce Scandi kitchens to extremely high standards. Suppliers such as Roundhouse and Sola Kitchens use high-quality components for kitchens that will last a very long time. They’ll also design a kitchen to your individual requirements, making the best use of the available space.
The downside, of course, is the cost, which is extremely high. For a large kitchen, including granite or quartz worktops, good quality appliances and fitting, they’re likely to quote £60,000 – £150,000.
If money’s no object, of course, you’ll get a great kitchen that will last for years — but are there alternatives?
Scandi kitchens from smaller, independent kitchen showrooms
Besides the well-known, high-end, bespoke suppliers, there are many smaller independent kitchen showrooms that supply Scandi kitchens. These vary considerably in quality. Therefore, some are no better quality than the high-street chains and trade-only suppliers where as others are just as good quality as places like Roundhouse and Sola Kitchens.
The prices they charge differ too. So, some are similar in price to the high-street chains and trade-only suppliers where as others are just as expensive as the high-end, bespoke suppliers.
The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune to get a good-quality kitchen. There are some smaller suppliers whose kitchens start at similar prices to places like Howdens, Wren & Magnet, but are much higher-quality. Plus, they’ll design you’re kitchen just as well as what places like Sola Kitchens and Roundhouse will.
