When buying kitchen cupboards don’t be drawn by the Magnet of the Comfort Zone
A man asked his best friend if he had ever been unfaithful to his wife. His friend shrugged and replied, “Why go out for a burger when you’ve got steak at home?” Now why did that old joke remind me of a seemingly boring subject like kitchen cupboards?
Well, let me explain. Many people do go out for a burger when they’ve got a nice cut of sirloin in the fridge. It’s easier and quicker. Everything is done for them and the taste of the meal is almost incidental. It’s what I call the Comfort Zone. It’s comforting and it fills a hole. Never mind if it makes you feel a bit queasy later.
Kitchen cupboards are no different. There’s nothing wrong with cheap and cheerful, as long as the product really is cheap and really does make you feel cheerful. But how often is that? Invariably, the joy of the quick fix is replaced by the regret of rushing in and doing the wrong thing.
I see this all the time when people are buying new kitchen cupboards, and it doesn’t matter whether we’re talking about budget kitchen cupboards, luxury kitchen cupboards, designer kitchen cupboards, gloss kitchen cupboards or whatever. They can’t wait to get it installed and so they go for the quick fix. Off they trot to their local Howdens, Wickes or Magnet, because it’s as easy as one-two-three. As easy, in fact, as buying a burger at McDonalds.
But they’re not getting the cheapest deal and they are certainly not getting the best quality. The morphine-like pull of the Comfort Zone simply convinces them that they are.
If you want the proof of this, then simply check out some of the chat forums on the Internet where customers swap stories about their kitchen renovations and their lovely new kitchen cupboards. I came across a real beauty the other day. A lady who had bought her kitchen cupboards from one of the multiple outlets a few years ago was telling her friend how pleased she was with it. Some of the wood had chipped, one of the draws was sticking and several other things had started to go wrong. But would she go back to the same store again? You bet! Why? Because the staff were nice to her. Yes, I bet they were!
I have been banging the drum in support of independent kitchen specialists for as long as I can remember, because I know that they are the best long term investment for my customers. Nor does the price you pay have to be outrageous. Independent specialists are about quality, care, craftsmanship and after sales service. They take a pride in what they do. They don’t just take your money, box up your kitchen and politely shove you and your package out of the door.
