How to find quality kitchens that don’t cost the earth
When we’re buying a new kitchen, most of us have to do a balancing act. We’re looking for quality kitchens, but we want to keep the cost within our budget. Is there any way of achieving both at the same time?
How NOT to find quality kitchens
The obvious places to try are the big high street chains. After all, they’re constantly telling us about the bargains we’ll get from them, and as often as not they have a 50% off sale. Or, if we’re more adventurous, we might go straight to the trade only suppliers builders use.
Unfortunately, these bargains aren’t all they seem — what these chains & trade suppliers sell are neither quality kitchens nor cheap kitchens. Instead, they’re low quality kitchens which are very overpriced for what you’re getting.
And don’t be fooled by those never ending sales either. All the chains do is inflate their prices so they can then offer large discounts. The discounts are designed to mislead consumers into thinking they’re getting a bargain. This tactic, known as price anchoring, is one of the oldest sales tricks in the book & is also used by the sofa chains.
Quality kitchens at local showrooms
If you want quality kitchens at a reasonable price, the best places to go are independent kitchen showrooms. For a similar price to the chains & trade suppliers, you’ll can get a higher quality kitchen that will last much longer.
The chains & trade suppliers, for instance, will provide units with flimsy 3mm or 6mm hardboard backs. The problem with paper thin backs is they’ll soon bow. In contrast, the units most independent showrooms sell will have 18mm thick solid backs that will never bow.
The best independent showrooms will also only sell the highest quality type gloss doors, the painted & lacquered or acrylic types, whereas the chains & trade suppliers usually sell the low quality PET, PVC, vinyl or foil wrapped type gloss doors. The problem with all wrapped type gloss doors is they have a tendency to peel.
Installing quality kitchens
When you’ve found a showroom selling quality kitchens, don’t ruin it by getting a builder to fit it! A good builder may make an adequate job, but they won’t have the specialist experience to provide the highest-quality finishing, especially on things like the panels, plinths, trims, cornices and baffles.
They’re also likely to take at least twice as long as the specialists, for a similar price. That’s twice as long having your home disrupted and buying takeaways.
Plus, by using the same company to supply & fit your kitchen, there’s less chance of things going wrong. If you use multiple parties to supply your kitchen, there’s a high chance things will go wrong. The problem is, when things do go wrong, they’ll usually delay completion of the kitchen & can be stressful & costly to resolve.
