The 3 most useful features to consider when buying a built-in oven
The most important function of a built-in oven is it’s ability to cook & 10 years ago this would have been enough to satisfy most consumers needs. However, over the last 10 years things have started to change. Consumers have become much more discerning & are increasingly looking for features on a built-in oven that make their life easier.
We’ve chosen 3 of the most useful features to consider when buying a built-in oven.
Larger capacity
10 years ago the average built-in single oven capacity was 50 litres, today the average single oven capacity is more like 65 litres. Having a larger capacity means consumers can easily fit in a large joint, a tray of potatoes & a tray of vegetables at the same time. The ovens below are some of the largest capacity built-in single ovens available:
Above: The FXP609X Maxi oven from Candy has a capacity of 78 litres, which it says is 45% larger than a traditional single multifunction oven.
Above: The OB60SL11DEPX1 single oven from Fisher & Paykel benefits from a 77 litre cooking capacity.
Automatic cooking programmes
Many built-in single ovens today feature a large number of automatic cooking programmes. If you’d like to be able to cook a roast that taste’s like it’s been cooked by a Michelin star restaurant, just put the joint in the oven, input the weight, select how you’d like the joint cooked (ie: rare, medium, well done etc) & press go. Some of the ovens on the market are so clever that you don’t even need to input the weight of the joint.
Combination steam ovens
If you like the idea of having a built-in steam oven but only have the space for a single oven in your kitchen, why not buy a built-in combi-steam oven? Combi-steam ovens offer all the functionality of a standard multifunction oven with added benefits of steam cooking. The trouble with standard multifunction ovens is they tend to dry food out. So, although roasts come out lovely & crispy on the outside, often they’ll be dry on the inside. A combi-steam oven avoids this drying effect by injecting steam into the oven cavity during the roasting cycle. This means that roasts come out crispy on the outside & moist & succulent on the inside.
