How to find the best-value kitchen suppliers
Kitchen suppliers seem to be everywhere you look these days, whether they’re large, well-known brands or smaller independents. If you’re looking for a new kitchen, you’ll want to find the best-value offer — the highest quality for the lowest price. However, that’s easier said than done.
So what options are there to find the best-value kitchen — and how do they measure up?
High-street chains and trade-only kitchen suppliers
The first stop in your search for kitchen suppliers is likely to be one of the large high-street chains. Brands such as Wren, Magnet and Wickes have a presence everywhere — and their ads tell us they’re the best.
An alternative some people try are trade-only suppliers like Howdens. You can’t access these directly, but you could go through a builder.
All these have the advantage of being cheap — but unfortunately there’s a good reason why they’re cheap. This is because they are low-quality and don’t last very long. The old saying “buy cheap, buy twice” certainly applies here.
Not only are the quality of the kitchens these places supply poor, but so too are their designs. Their designs rarely make good use of the available space. They also usually contain design errors. The problem is, most consumers don’t usually discover these design errors until they start using the kitchen. By which time, it’s too late.
The other downside of buying a kitchen from a trade-only supplier like Howdens is that you’re buying a kitchen with little or no come back. This is because your contract is with the builder and not with Howdens. Therefore, if you get a problem later on with the kitchen, when you try going back to Howdens, they’ll usually tell you that they only deal with the trade and you need to go back to your builder. However, when you go back to your builder, they’ll usually tell you that they are only responsible for the fitting and you need to go back to Howdens. This toing and froing usually goes on for some time until people eventually give up. Unsurprisingly, builders never make consumers aware of this.
Independent kitchen showrooms
Besides the large kitchen suppliers, there are a great many smaller, independent kitchen showrooms. These differ substantially in terms of both price and quality. So, some charge similar to places like Wren, Magnet, Wickes and Howdens where as others charge substantially more. Likewise, the kitchens some of them offer are low-quality where as others are high-quality.
The good news is, you don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune to get a good-quality kitchen. If you know the right showrooms to visit, it’s possible to get a kitchen that costs similar to places like Wren, Magnet, Wickes and Howdens, but is higher-quality. Plus, the design they’ll produce for you will make best use of the available space and be free from design errors.
