Should you buy pocket doors for your kitchen?
If you browse interior design magazines, you might see examples of pocket doors in kitchens. These are doors that can hide appliances when closed, or whole sections of the working kitchen. They can even be used to hide the kitchen entirely. They can look stunning, but are they a good idea to buy? Should you buy pocket doors for your kitchen?
Reasons to buy pocket doors for your kitchen:
To hide appliances
If you’re using your kitchen as living space or for entertaining, you do not necessarily want the appliances always on show. They may be essential, but even more high-end models may spoil the look of the room in these situations.
Pocket doors in your kitchen can hide them from sight when closed, but leave them still accessible when needed.
To hide a coffee station
A coffee station, with coffee-maker and crockery ready for use, makes it quick and easy to serve your guests. On the other hand, you don’t necessarily want your guests to see it. With pocket doors to cover the coffee station, you can apparently produce coffee from nowhere.
Coffee stations are not the only component that can be hidden by pocket doors in your kitchen. If you have a mini-bar in your kitchen, for instance, you might not want it on show all the time. You can hide it behind pocket doors.
To hide the whole kitchen
Wanting to hide your whole kitchen might seem strange. However, when space is at a premium (e.g. in city centre apartments) you may not want the kitchen on show. Careful use of pocket doors in your kitchen can hide it all when closed.
Reasons not to buy them:
Cost
Using pocket doors in your kitchen can look stylish, but they are not viable if you are on a tight budget. A set of pocket doors usually cost between £8,000 & £12,000.
Limited availability
Because pocket doors cater for just the luxury end of the market, they’re not widely available. Only a few brands offer them — and those are invariably the more expensive brands.
