What to look for in kitchens for sale?
Whether you look in the high street chains or in local kitchen showrooms, there’s so many kitchens for sale. Therefore, it can be hard to know if you’re choosing the best. Looking for specific brands doesn’t always help either as many of the well known brands are actually the lowest quality.
So what should you look for in the mass of kitchens for sale?
What materials are used in the kitchens for sale?
When people look at kitchens for sale they often visualise how the kitchen will look straight after it’s fitted. However, The real test is how your new kitchen’s going to look five years down the line.
It’s essential to examine not only the visible parts of the units, but also the backs. In many kitchens for sale in the high street chains, the backs will be 3mm or 6mm hardboard. To ensure they don’t start to bow under the weight of the worktops, you should look for 18mm thick solid backs.
Another cost-cutting approach used by the chains is to use cheap PET, PVC, vinyl or foil wrapped type doors. These are the type that tend to peel within a few years. For longer-lasting gloss doors, look for the high-quality painted & lacquered or acrylic types.
Material for the worktops is more a matter of taste, Wooden worktops can look stunning but require lots of annual maintenance to ensure they stay in the best condition. If you’re looking for the least amount of maintenance, laminate worktops or quartz worktops are probably your best option. Granite worktops will require more maintenance than laminate and quartz as these are porous and need to sealed regularly to ensure they don’t become stained.
Can the kitchens for sale be customised?
The popular brands of kitchens for sale are based on standard dimensions and spaces. That’s all very well if you have a standard kitchen space, but if it’s at all unusual, you may have problems.
A fully custom-built kitchen can be expensive, but find out if the supplier can customise the one or two units that are causing problems. This will put the price up a little, but not massively.
Who’s going to fit it?
If you buy a kitchen from a major chain, they’ll charge you a fortune. On the other hand, a local builder may do an adequate job much more cheaply, but it’s likely to take longer, and they may not be prepared for the issues of the particular brand you’ve bought.
The best solution is to use a local independent showroom as both supplier and fitter. A good local showroom will sell high-quality brands and fit them expertly for not much more than a builder would charge. Plus, by using the same company to supply & fit your kitchen, there’s much less chance of things going wrong. If you use multiple parties to supply your kitchen, there’s always the risk that if things do go wrong, you’ll be left stuck in the middle with a half finished kitchen trying to work out who is to blame.
