Glass kitchens — are they worth the money?
If you’re looking for a new kitchen, you’ll find a wide range of finishes. Your decision will be based partly on taste and partly on budget. However, if money is no object you may consider looking at glass kitchens. But is this really a good option?
Advantages of glass kitchens
There’s no question that glass kitchens are the highest-quality finish you can get for a modern kitchen. When they first came out, they were only available in a gloss finish, however as they’ve become more popular, more brands have started to introduce matt finish glass kitchens.
You only have to feel the surface to appreciate the quality of a glass kitchen. Glass is the smoothest finish you can get, as well as the most reflective, and it has a coldness to the touch that no other material can offer.
Glass kitchens are the best money can buy, so if they match your tastes and your budget, why shouldn’t you go for one?
Disadvantages of glass kitchens
Unfortunately, all this doesn’t come without drawbacks, and the big one is the price-tag. Glass kitchens typically cost twice as much as lacquered kitchens, the next best, but the difference in quality isn’t as great as the price suggests. The finish on a good quality lacquered kitchen will be around 90% as good as glass, but it will cost around half the price.
Glass kitchens are vulnerable to damage, too. Their delicate edges can be easily chipped.
Glass doors are also prone to bowing and can be a nightmare with fingerprints.
There’s also the problem that they are hard to find. They’re typically only made by German, Italian and French kitchen brands. Therefore, they’re only available in some kitchen showrooms.
Alternatives to glass kitchens
If you want the biggest bang for your buck, you’ll be better off buying a lacquered kitchen over glass. The quality is only marginally lower for half the price. Lacquered kitchens also have far fewer disadvantages.
Alternatively, you may wish to look at a smart glass kitchen. Smart glass kitchens look almost identical to glass kitchens, but cost about 40% less. The other advantages of a smart glass is it’s more durable than glass, will never bow like glass and won’t show any fingerprints.
Of course, you may have set your heart on a glass kitchen and be willing to pay for it. If so, it’s crucial to find a showroom that won’t over inflate its prices like many kitchen showrooms do.
